final blog reflection

When I first entered this class, I did not know what to expect. I was an undecided major, and I felt like I did not belong with the people around me. As classes went on I started to feel more comfortable being myself. Class discussions were really helpful. I liked the fact that everyone was entitled to their own opinion. For the presentations, I was glad we got to choose what we wanted to present. It made me feel more comfortable speaking in front of the class. I enjoyed talking and learning about Flash Mobs from the Howard Rheingold reading. Learning about Wikipedia was something I was really excited about. I was excited about contributing to the World Wide Web, but I was also scared of being rejected and ridiculed by the other users. I got lucky because the fantasy basketball page on Wikipedia was dead. There no active users. Using the blogs was also really helpful. I have always wanted to start up a blog of my own, but I thought it would be too complicated. I was glad that we learned how to set up a blog as a class. It was an easy way to communicate with classmates, and it was an easy way to keep the class organized. The reflective essay was a pain to start writing. I have a problem with starting things, but once I get started I can go into deep attention and finish it on time. The reflective essay was a good way to bring back the material we learned earlier in the class. I wish that we could have written about 5 of the reading rather than 7. There were some readings that were not that interesting to me. The hyper text essay was one of the hardest things for me in this class. I did not understand the concept of a research question, but as soon as I discovered a research question, everything else seemed to be easy for me. I was glad I finally got to use Microsoft FrontPage. Even though we used the computers with a lot of locks, it was a fun and stressful situation.

In class we searched the web for different phone novels, electronic literature, and flash mobs. I found phone novels to be really interesting. Electronic literature seemed to be fun, but also confusing. I enjoyed flash mobs the most in this class. It was really fun being able to do research on this topic. I disliked some of the readings that we had to read. I did not like produsage, and remediation. I feel that I could have missed those days in class and still be caught up with everyone. I guess it is just because I am lazy and I had a hard time reading both of readings.

I wish we could’ve spent more time on the hypertext essays. It would’ve been nice to work on FrontPage a lot more. I feel that we could have spent less time on the readings. I feel that some of the readings did not help me at all (remediation and produsage). If had more time I wish could’ve learned some code. I feel that learning some code will help me somehow in the future.

Do I feel prepared to do whatever I need to do with “writing for cyberspace”? As I stated earlier, I was an undecided major. Now I am a business management major. I feel that I learned a lot about how writing technology has changed a lot overtime. I feel that I will carry on the information I learned throughout my life. I don’t know what exactly I will carry on, but I know I learned something from this class.

Blog 17 hypertext revised

Fantasy Sports started off with pencil and paper. Fantasy followers had to keep track of their teams’ stats to record the number of points they would receive for that day. As technology came into the picture, more fantasy sports games were available online for the convenience of the fantasy sports fans. People were able to watch games at ease without the need of doing any work. They just had to go online and look at the results.

All fantasy sports are considered to be a type of game. It is a game where a fantasy owner builds a team, and they use the team to compete against other fantasy owners. Fantasy owners compete against each other based on statistics that are generated from individual players or even a team of a professional sport. There are different types of point systems for every fantasy sport. In fantasy sports there is the ability to trade, cut, and sign players just like real sports owners. Playing fantasy sports requires owners to keep up-to date with the real world sport. It is hard for people to win if they barely follow the real world sport. They can turn a really good team into a losing team just by not following the sport. Most fantasy players are people that are somewhat interested in the sport.

Fantasy Sports leagues started almost 40 years ago. Paper- based versions of fantasy football started in the 1960’s. Rotisserie Baseball started in the 1979. Both of these sports started off with a bunch of friends that were competing against each other for the title of “best knowledge of sports”. People that followed Rotisserie Baseball had to rush to the morning newspaper to see the box score of their games. Playing paper- based fantasy sports, players had to come together for the discussion of the rules and the initial draft. Players also had to communicate with the commissioner of the league at least once a week to discuss their starting line- ups. The scores and outcomes at the end of each week also had to be discussed and recorded. Some sports writers that participated would even call Major League offices to acquire injury updates on the players they owned in the fantasy league. Players that participated in these paper- based leagues had to show effort. They had to be serious about the game.

Fantasy Sports evolved as free web technology came into the picture. It made it more convenient for participants to play. The use of free web technology reduces the need of social organization. People were able to pre-rank their draft order making it possible for on-line drafts to occur. There is no more need for weekly meetings. Everything was available online. Scores and statistics were no longer necessary to record. It was already calculated and ready to be viewed. People are able to relax and enjoy the game. Most leagues are found online at ESPN.com and Yahoo.com. They can also be found on official league websites such as NBA.com, NFL.com and MLB.com.

Since fantasy games are available online, it makes fantasy owners able to participate in many leagues at ease. Fantasy owners can play in a league with people they have never spoken too or ever seen. People can now play with people in other countries. Fantasy owners are also able to communicate with one another on certain websites. Most websites have a messaging system built in so that players can trash talk, talk about trades, and discuss certain matchups. As fantasy sports continued to evolve, everything was available on the main page of your fantasy team. There would be a commissioner’s message, which is a message from the owner of the league. There are also the league’s top stories, such as injuries, trades, and suspensions, that happened in the real world sport. Some fantasy sports websites also have polls that participants are able fill out.

The Fantasy Sports Trade Association (FSTA) was formed in 1998. It created a forum for the interaction of the hundreds of companies that were emerging in the growing Fantasy Sports Industry. There are many different types of fantasy games available to play online. There is fantasy auto racing, bass fishing, soccer, cricket, horse racing, hot- rodding, and many more. More sports started to join this fantasy arena because of the fan base of fantasy gaming. There are approximately 30 million people that participate in fantasy sports in the United States and in Canada. People participate in fantasy leagues for many reasons. Some leagues have a cash payoff and some people play for bragging rights.

Fantasy sports can only expand in the future. People are already able to check up on their fantasy stats through text messaging. There are also phone plans/ applications that allow people to update their rosters and make trades from their phones. There are already some television shows that are specifically made for fantasy sports players. The communication function on certain websites can be on all of the websites. They could also make it possible to have video chat. Fantasy sports will become more fitting for a wider range of people. I believe fantasy sports will become more popular as years go by.

Blog 19 Free post

It is almost time for the NBA Playoffs. I am an Orlando Magic fan. They are currently in third place in the eastern conference. They are fighting for the second place spot so they could have home court advantage.
My NBA fantasy leagues went all wrong this year. i blame it all on injuries and bad decision making on my part. i also blame it on my weird class schedule and my procrastination. this was my first season with all of my teams ended with losing records. it is embarrassing. i can't wait to rebound next season.

School this semester is pretty tough. i can't wait until this semester is finally over. I just want to sit down and not worry about any of my classes... that is until summer classes begin.

Blog 18 Style for Attending

1. On a daily basis I need my Yahoo and my music. yahoo is my homepage. i make sure to go on yahoo.com everyday to see the top stories. even though most of them are not important i feel the need to read some of the articles any way. i also have to check my facebook at least once day. i could go a week without both of these websites. i only go on these websites when i am near a computer. they are usually always the first places i visit before i have to do anything on the internet. i need my music daily. i can't go a day without hearing some sort of music. i wake up to a cd or radio. i listen to music while surfing the web. i believe these trends formed since i was 15.

From ages 5 - 10 i never had the internet, so it was always tv. i would always have to watch some tv while i did something. i did not like eating without tv. i was never really good at doing my hw while watching tv, but i always managed to turn off the tv when the commercials came.

2. i spend 6 - 8 hours a week on the computer. i spend 6-8 hours a week with the tv. i listen to music whenever i get a chance. i guess 1 and half hours a music per day. (including car rides) i don't play that much video games anymore maybe 2- 3 hours a week.

3. -i am able to do most of math hw with some music. i can't watch tv or be online. i am able to listen to music on a low volume while doing math hw
-i have to have silence when i am reading an assignment. i get easily distracted by the smallest sounds. i have to read my assignments at peace to get a good understanding of it.
-when writing a paper i need the internet for some sources and definitions. but the only other thing i have open is microsoft word. i cannot be listening to music or be surfing the web. i have pay attention to what i am writing. i stay away from the tv when i have something important to do.

4. - when i am driving i need music. i rarely drive home with no music on. i need music to stay focused on the road. with no music i think i would just fall asleep.
- i need tv when i am eating by myself. i think it makes the meal more enjoyable. i also feel more relaxed while watching tv while eating. if i don;t have tv, i feel like i am being rushed.
-when i am with family we need tv, we usually have quiet dinners.

Blog 16 Rough Hypertext

I am thinking about using a linear with nodes outline for my hypertext essay.

I am going to add a brief history of fantasy sports to my essay for people to get a better understanding of how fantasy sports originated. I have also been using 2 additional sources that were provided to me from Dr. Chandler. I believe i will need more time to write this essay.

How has digital Technology changed Fantasy Sports?

Blog 12 and 15 - Wikipedia

As I said in class I slacked off so I decided to post these 2 blogs together.

I kept an eye on the discussion part of my Wiki post for way too long. I was waiting for someone to respond, but no one ever did. After I posted my contribution to the fantasy basketball  page, i made sure to check on it at least 2 -3 times a day. I didn't see any changes. I went over to my cousin's house this weekend and i showed him my post. He made an edit because i had an embarrassing spelling error.  I also made some of my own edits. It took me a while to figure out how to add an external link, but then i just looked at another person's post to see how they did it.
My page is dead. No one contributes to it any more. I believe the people who used to contribute, had an argument about posting useless information. At first i was kind of mad that no one had responded to my discussion. Now i am really glad that no one has responded. It makes my life easier, but my first wikipedia experience boring.
I've learned that online communities can be pretty harsh. I didn't learn that from my experience with wiki, but with my classmates experiences. I felt bad for some of my classmates because they tried really hard to contribute to Wiki but they always got booted off. Wikipedia also reminds me of  our first experience with Google Docs. A bunch of people getting together to work on something at one time. It surprised me when some of my classmates posts were taken down 1 minute after posting it. I believe Wikipedia is way more or organized than Google Docs. but I feel that they have almost they same function.
I am glad that I finally contributed to wikipedia. I was looking foward to this point of the class for a long time. I plan on messing around on Wikipedia alot more now that i kind of got the hang of it.

Here is the link to my Wikipedia Page : Fantasy Basketball

I added the Communication heading under the League Settings

My Wiki Name is: BorrisdaButhcher

Blog 14

The Purpose of my Hypertext article: To inform the audience of how digital technology has improved fantasy sports.

Detailed Statement: Fantasy Sports used to be done with a pencil and paper. Fantasy followers used to keep track of their teams to record the number of points they would receive. As technology came into the picture, more fantasy sports games were available online for the convenience of the participants. People were able to watch games without the need of doing any work. They just had to go online and look at the results.

List of Information Need to Gather:
- How new digital technology has provided more games?
- How did the organization of fantasy sports evolve when new technology came into the picture?
- How did new technology bring in more people to play fantasy sports?
- More time to enjoy the game and less time worrying about recording stats
- Why are there more sports joining the fantasy arena?
- How can people still communicate with one another while being in different areas and still feel like they are together?

Sources:
- http://sports.espn.go.com/espnmag/story?id=3521690
- News Games

Plan:
My goal is to use all of these websites to gather information on how fantasy sports has changed throughout the years. I also want to focus on how technology has dramatically affected the way fantasy sports are played today. Most people have moved away from pencil and paper and have joined an online league.

The main goal is to answer the question: How has digital Technology changed Fantasy Sports?

Blog 11

Audience: I want to inform teenagers and young adults. I would also like to inform people who were never sure of what fantasy basketball is. Having teenagers and young adults as my audience i feel that it will help me get through to the audience much clearer.

Purpose: I want to inform the people about fantasy basketball. I would like to explain to them how it is played. I also want them to be aware of how technology is involved to make fantasy sports even better. I feel that explaining what fantasy basketball is to teenagers and young adults will help spread the word about it to make more people want to play. I don't think this essay will be too boring for them. I believe that they will find it easy to understand.

Focus: How the use of technology creates a better understanding of different fantasy sports games and sports in general.

Blog 10

My Hypertext essay will be about Fantasy Basketball. In my Wikipedia post I mostly talked about the communication aspect of Fantasy basketball. For my hypertext essay i want to go further into fantasy basketball. i want to explain how fantasy basketball is different from normal basketball. i also want to show how technology has created a wider fan base for fantasy basketball. i will also explain how fantasy basketball has changed the way people look at the sport of basketball.

My goal is to inform people who never knew what fantasy basketball is. I also want to inform sports fans on how all fantasy sports have changed the way all sports are being looked at.

i still have to add a lot more information to this, but i believe there will be enough information to make this hypertext essay possible.

Blog 9 Produsage

The article on produsage can relate to the articles we have read in class. Axel Bruns describes produsage as traditional modes of industrial production. The need to build , operate, and maintain the means of production of physical good and the need to distribute them. There has to be producers in order for there to be consumers.

1) The uses of the internet are for consumers. People visit the sites that are known and that are popular. People don't want to shop Online on a website that they never heard of. The internet is full of producers and consumers. The internet also involves distributors. Ebay is a good example of this system. the person trying to sell an item will go to the distributor, which is Ebay. then Ebay will make a listing for consumers. A consumer wants to "Consume" the item.

2)

3) Remediation - Producers have changed Technology. They have gone out and found the most conveinient ways to sell things. People are now able to buy things online, through the phone, through tv. People don't have to step out of as much as they used too. All they have to do is open the door and sign a paper when the item is delivered. Producers put things online so that they can be spread and known around the web. Everything on the web is there so it can be shown. the traditional ways of doing things have changed. There is online shopping, online banking, and online communicating. By typing up an email, a producer is sending out information for a consumer to consume.

4) Flashmobs= Produsage. A producer has to form a message/email to distribute. when it is distributed, all the consumers can now be called the distributors if they decide to pass the message on. Flashmobs plan everything out in precise details. They have to stay in touch with one another. Producers will distribute messages to consumers and they will also disribute the messages to other consumers.

5) Wikipedia- Wikipedia is an online collaborative encyclopedia. It is full of Producers, consumers and distributors. Producers write up information and distribute it online for all consumers to see. If a consumer disagrees or has more to he/she is able to produce his/her own information. This process is ongoing, until no more information is to be added.

Blog 8 Exploratory Writing for Wiki

I did some research on wikipedia about fantasy basketball. It explains how fantasy basketball is what it is today. It also explains all the different settings and the different types of leagues. I think i will be able to add more information, but i feel that it will be a little hard to make it relate to what we learned in class.

Fantasy Basketball creates a new form of communication. People that are involved in Fantasy Basketball Leagues are able to communicate with one another using the internet. most fantasy leagues have a funtion where league owners can talk back and forth by just signing on. Yahoo Fantasy Sports has a feature called "smack talk". Being able to communicate while watching your fantasy league makes it seem like you are actually there watching the game with other people.

I am also thinking about writing about something else. On Yahoo Sports NBA, there is this Blog which i follow. I think that would be a better topic to talk about, but i will have to do some more research before i start that.

Blog 7 Flashmobs

I was glad I got to work on this article. I've learned a lot more than i expected to learn. I thought it was interesting that were many different ways flashmobs were created. I was shocked at all the different ways we are able to communicate through texting. I also enjoyed reading about the different experiments they had created to prevent bad flashmobs("Netwars") to occur. Overall i had a lot of fun doing research on flashmobs. It was fun just looking up videos on youtube. I hope that i get a chance to participate in a flashmob once in my life.

Digital communications have started a whole new chapter of communication. People are able to stay in contact all the time. We don't have to wait for a letter to come in the mail anymore. We don't have to go outside and get the newspaper. We now have everything we need in the palm of our hands. Technolgy will always get better, so i don't think i can predict what will happen in the future. There are always going to be a "better" one. It's like buying a new car, there will always be a new model the year after, but with digital technology it dones't always take a year.

Blog 6 Final Draft

When I look back at my life, I see that writing has taken a big role on the person that I am. I remember starting off with crayon and some scrap paper, and now I barely see myself writing with a pen or pencil. If I have any work to be finished, I will always be seen around a computer. I guess nowadays I rely more on the computer than I can rely on myself. Digital technologies have taken over my life!

When I was younger, I remember my parents having to force me to write. They would always make me write the alphabet and a lot of random sentences. I would always refuse and go run upstairs and watch television. I didn’t mind reading books when I was younger, but I hated to write. My favorite author was Dr. Suess. I loved reading his books. My parents never had to force me to read. I loved looking at the pictures, and how I was able to picture myself actually being in the story.

When I entered elementary school, I started to like writing a lot more. I enjoyed writing stories. I loved writing imaginary stories. I thought they were really fun and creative. I never really cared about how sloppy I was, I just felt free. When I was in third grade, I started to learn how to write in cursive. I thought it was pretty awesome but then I found out that I always had to use it. From third to fifth grade, it was necessary to know how to write in cursive. Teachers would not allow any papers with out cursive. My cursive was really sloppy and I didn’t get the point of it. Cursive ruined writing for me. I realized that as I grew older there were more rules to follow. I wasn’t able to write my superhero fantasies any more. I felt like teachers had taken advantage of my writing freedom. I am over exaggerating; I understand teachers have to do what they are told.

I got my first computer when I was in the third grade. I didn’t really have to do any school work on it. All I did on the computer was play games and use Microsoft paint. I also used the Encarta encyclopedia. I used it for almost all my projects I did for school. I did not have the internet until I entered middle school. The first time I typed up an essay was in the middle of the fifth grade. I was so excited. It made my writing seem official. It also made it look really neat and professional. I loved how the word processor would correct all my mistakes. When I would hand write something I would always have some unintelligent mistakes. Typing my essays on the computer allowed me to get rid of some of the brain farts in my writing. Being able to write on the computer brought writing back in to my life; not that it ever left.

As I grew older and entered middle school, my parents started to dwindle away from my school work. That meant I had to study on my own, and I also had to become more responsible. My parents stopped checking my homework, and stopped asking me for test grades. I was pretty much on my own. All they wanted to see was my report card. If I needed help, my parents were always there, but my parents also bought me a new best friend: the internet.

America Online! I finally got an internet service when I was in 6th grade. After many years of convincing my dad, we finally got America Online. I was inseparable from the computer. The internet opened up many doors for me. I started relying on the internet to get most of homework and projects done. School was getting a lot more demanding. Different teachers had different expectations. I knew it was going to be hard to get through middle school alone. I would be online for hours doing homework, chatting with friends through instant messenger, and also doing research on popular music and movies. My parents hated the internet because it clogged up the phone line, but they had to get used to it. Well actually they did not allow me to go on until after nine pm, but that was alright with me.

I found myself using Microsoft Word a lot more in middle school. English teachers recommended papers that were typed up. I took advantage of that and typed up all my essays. Typing up my essays was easier for me because it gave me more freedom to edit my paper. I didn’t have to go buy white out anymore. I was able to add in sentences without having to draw random arrows showing where the sentence is supposed to go. The internet was also very helpful in middle school. There were a lot more projects that had to be done. The internet made it easier to find material on specific subjects. Google came in handy for a lot of my History projects and papers.

Having certain technologies growing up became a big part of my life. I remember the day when my family got Verizon DSL. There was finally an affordable high speed internet service available. It took me months to persuade my family to get rid AOL. I had to introduce them to AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) and to other email sites such as Yahoo and Hotmail. I believe I was in the 8th grade when we made the switch. I was really excited that I was able to go online and talk on the phone at the same time. No more clogging up the phone lines! I was always on the computer now. I wouldn’t even sign out of AIM. My parents were happy they were able to make and receive phone calls. The only person that was upset was my older sister. She was mad because I was selfish with the computer, but she had no reason to get the parents involved.

When I entered high school, there was no excuse for not having papers typed up. Teachers would not accept hand written work unless if it was a rough draft. There were also many different projects that required internet resources. Once again, Google became my savior. I also relied heavily on AIM. AIM helped me gain confidence. I felt that it was easier to communicate with people through the internet than in person. But I also believe that the confidence I gained through AIM has also carried over in the real world. MySpace had also taken over my life. I remember making an account to keep in touch with friends, because AIM wasn’t “good” enough. I had to go on MySpace at least 3- 4 times a day. I was addicted. Both of these technologies had changed my way of writing. I started to use more slang and a lot more abbreviations. This sort of ruined my writing for classes. I started to have to re-read my papers 3 to 4 times to make sure there is nothing inappropriate in it. Such as the word “you” I had to make sure I had spelled it out the right way instead of using just the letter “u”. I had to become more aware of the different types of writing styles I used.

The only problem I had with MySpace was that it was not the best way to communicate with one another. This is where new technology comes in to my life. I got my first cell phone when I was in tenth grade. Well it actually wasn’t only mine. I had to share my phone with my older sister. She held on to it more because she was able to drive and she went out a lot more than I did. But a year later, I finally got my own first cell phone. I felt like a new, mature man. Having my own cell phone was great because I felt like I was more responsible. I was able to communicate with anyone within 30 seconds. This meant less time on AIM and more time on the phone. Having a cell phone also made me move away from MySpace.

By my junior year in high school, I realized that I was a much better writer than before. I learned new ways to write in school and I also avoided talking in abbreviations and slang online. In my senior year I took a Microsoft Office Skills course. The objective of this class was to learn how to use Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point. Before taking this class I pretty much self taught myself how to use these programs. I already had some previous knowledge of word because of all the essays I typed up but I did learn certain things that made it easier for me. Microsoft Excel helped me make a lot of graphs and data sheets. I believe Microsoft Power Point was the most helpful program I learned. I did have previous knowledge on it, but I didn’t know about the creativity that could also be involved. I started using Power Point presentations for most of my class presentations.

After high school the only new technologies I got into was text messaging and Facebook. It made communicating with friends easier. It was less of a hassle. It did not interfere with my writing as much as I thought it would. For text messaging I do use abbreviations, but I am a different person when it came to writing on the computer. I don’t write in my note books anymore, unless it is in class and just for notes and assignments. I am trying to save up for a laptop so I could almost eliminate that problem. I believe my writing has become more mature over the years. I try to avoid making simple mistakes and I also only write about what is necessary. I am the same person in my writing as I am in real life. The new advances in writing technology have only benefited me. I don’t think it is slowing me down. I believe I owe technology a big thank you for making me the person that I am.

Blog 5 wikipedia

I am still a little confused on the topic I should choose. I believe I want to talk about Fantasy sports. I have participated in many different leagues. I have joined numerous basketball leagues. I recently just played my first season of football too. I would like to write about how the system works and how it is different from the normal game. There are also different types of scoring systems that vary by league settings. Some of my friends and family don’t understand the point of fantasy gaming. I didn’t get it either until I joined my first league. It requires time and research to keep up with some leagues. I think talking about fantasy sports would be a good topic to research about. I am thinking about fantasy basketball more than football.

Blog 4 Draft

a little bit left to go...Sorry

i started to revise it here so most of this is in my final copy. Sorry

Blog 3 Lankshear and Knobel

This article was really long. Lankshear and Knobel both explained a lot of points. I did not really read the full article. I glanced at it quickly to get the main idea. The main subject I got from this article was the differences in old and new technology. There are two different mindsets. The first mindset is mostly physical, an individual would be the unit of production. The second mindset is more digital.

I believe I have the second mindset. I rather email a friend than write a letter to him/her. I rather do my research on the Internet than read information from many books. I believe the digital world is easier and more convenient for me. It makes everything easier.

Blog 2- course readings

I dislike reading. I was going to say hate but that is such a strong word. I think I might find the course readings pretty interesting. I am excited to read "Flashmobs" by Rheingold. After Dr. Chandler described what flash mobs were and what they did, I was amazed. I can't wait to read more into it. I would love to be part of a flash mob. I believe it would would be really fun and crazy. I think I have seen videos on youtube with flash mobs but i don't remember seeing the word flash mob any where. I can't wait to learn more about flash mobs.

google docs

I have never heard of google docs until the first day of this class. I have mixed feelings for google docs. I think it is a great way to have many people contribute to a certain document. I just wish that there would an easier way to make it so it wouldn't allow many people to sign in at one time. It gets to confusing when 2 or more people are working on it at once. I waited a long time to do my edits because I was scared I would mess up one of my classmates edit. I had to make sure no one was online editing while I was. I believe googe docs is a great way for classmates to interact on a document, but I think it would be better if there were smaller groups and organized times when people are allowed to go on.
